Announcing: “Resilience: Black Heritage in St. Augustine”

The Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center is teaming up with local organizations to present Resilience: Black Heritage in St. Augustine. This is a year-long program starting in 2021 to improve the community’s historic narrative by educating the public with stories of Black experiences while living in Saint Augustine from the 1500’s to current day.

The project will include a variety of events including multiple virtual lecture series, a MLK Commemoration Celebration and a monthly Military Muster. Through these events, the community will foster an ongoing dialogue about Saint Augustine’s complete history and the struggles Black residents faced in this community.

On Thursday, December 31st, 2020, from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm, the LMCC will kickstart the Resilience Project with our five-part lecture series called “From Civil War to Civil Rights: A Lincolnville Saga.” Lincolnville Executive Director, Regina Gayle Phillips, will present part one of the lecture series, titled “Watch Night: Looking to Freedom,” which explores an Emancipation Day tradition.

On Thursday, March 18th, 2021, from 5:30pm to 7:30 pm, the LMCC will host another lecture by Dr. Martha Bireda. This lecture, titled “Powerful Doctoring Women,” will present stories about how grannies and midwives used their knowledge of local herbs and plants for healing.
